Book Review: The Husband Auditions

BOOK BY: Angela Ruth Strong

Fans of “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days” will fall in love with Meri and Kai as they set out to prove that catching a husband isn’t as easy as following a list from the 1950s.

Meredith is the last of her single friends without marriage prospects. When her best friend, and new bride, hands Meri a list passed down from her friend’s grandmother, she laughs at the absurdity of the 101 things to do to catch a husband. Kai needs to create a demo reel of extraordinary footage to land his dream job as a cameraman on one of the most sought-after television shows. A working relationship is struck – Kai will get his footage, and Meri will prove to the world that finding forever love isn’t found by following a list.

Meri and Kai have an interesting relationship. There’s a lot of bickering, side-handed remarks, fun moments, and a deep appreciation for the other. As they work on their YouTube show, readers are treated to a slow-burn romance, with obvious moments of falling in love. It’s easy for their fictional and reader fans to see, yet our characters stay in denial for a good, long while.

Kai is a likeable hero and the Hawaiian “hang loose” spirit is captured well. I’m a big fan!

The secondary characters add a lot of humour to the story. Gemma – the model perfect roommate who is always lost in her story-world mind is quirky, a bit unrealistic, but a fun addition to the cast. Meri’s family and friends help round out her support system, and add to her personal conflicts about love and marriage.

Descriptions of Portland, OR are vivid, bringing readers deep into Meri and Kai’s world.

It was nice to have a faith thread in which characters make attending church services a regular routine.

As for the list of 101 Ways to Catch a Husband, avid readers of the author provided the tips. The wording and some ideas didn’t seem to fit the 1950s era, so this was a bit of a downer. However, from reading the author’s notes at the end I understand why there had to be a substitute list. I’m curious though what the original 1950s article said.

This is a fun summer time read.
