BOOK BY: Marybeth Mayhew Whalen
The book has an interesting premise – three women walk into a post office and become hostages for a day.
Unfortunately, this book wasn’t what I expected.
It’s the first time I’ve read a book by this author, so I’m not sure if mostly telling the story is her writing style. It was a bit jolting at first, but eventually I got used to it. The pacing of the story was quite slow. Quite a bit of backstory is given for each character trapped at the post office. The packages the women go to mail were supposed to be life-altering (I’ll let you decide if you agree). We eventually find out what was inside each one.
But what really surprised me was the cussing in the story – it really jarred and I double-checked the publisher name. So, this was a huge disappointment when it didn’t feel necessary, and there are other ways of handling swearing if it was deemed necessary.
I did really like Bo and I quite enjoyed his surprise twist at the end.
The description of the post office was well done – I could picture the vestibule and reception area where the majority of the story took place.
I received an ecopy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
