I’ve recently taken to reading series, completing the series in order. Let me tell you, there are some fantastic series out there. It was difficult to narrow down my choices to only five series. These books had two or more novels within the series that stayed with me (receiving 5 stars in my Goodreads reviews). Some of them are older series, but perhaps it might become a “new” series to you!
Suspense
There are many suspense authors I love to read: Elizabeth Goddard (check out her Missing in Alaska series), Patricia Bradley, Laurie Wood, Janice Cantore, James Hannibal and Tom Threadgill, but by far, Susan May Warren has knocked it out of the park with her connected series (or is that serieses???). It’s no wonder readers keep coming back for more…after writing 100 books (that’s right – she hit the 100 book milestone in 2025!), she may know a little something about writing books that readers want.
In case you’re a SMW newbie, have no fear. You can jump into any series without losing context of the other books. There are characters from other novels (almost guaranteed), but their presence isn’t enough to distract from the main story. I started with the Sky King Ranch series and kept reading from there.
By far, my favourite SMW series is The Minnesota Kingstons.
Historical Novels
If you check out my Goodreads year in review for 2025, historical fiction is clearly the winner on my bookshelf. I have authors that I don’t hesitate to grab their books – Cathy Gohlke, Michelle Griep, Carolyn Miller, Amy Green, and so many others (check out any book reviews with the historical fiction or historical romance tag). But there’s something special about these historical series that I’m drawn to. I just can’t put my finger on it, but these books are in my TBRA pile – To be read again.
In no certain order, my top four bingeable historical series:
Roseanna M. White‘s Codebreaker series. A fantastic WW1 series about women who aided Britain in intelligence. This series is connected to two previous series (which are also bingeworthy): Ladies of the Manor and Shadows Over England.
Julie Klassen writes novels reminiscent of Jane Austen, giving readers more of a daily experience in the lives of her characters. When she released her first series, Tales from Ivy Hill, I wasn’t sure I’d like it since the rest of her books are suspenseful standalones. That series didn’t disappoint, but On Devonshire Shores is my favourite series of hers.
Gabrielle Meyer’s Timeless series was an unexpected hit in the Christian publishing circles. Readers rave about the series, and the author has been contracted to write book 7! That’s unheard of in the traditional publishing world. I read book one when it first came out and couldn’t wait for the second to release. This series should be read in order. Characters are intimately connected and readers will appreciate the stories as they come more if the series is read in order. A time-crossing series that gives such rich historical details in both time lines.
Erica Vetsch has created a universe that readers enjoy – The Haverley Universe. I won’t give any spoilers, but let’s just say, readers wanted more from a character introduced in book one and Erica Vetsch delivered. Each connected series is three books long. Readers should start with The Indebted Earl, the first in the Serendipity and Secrets series (my favourite of the Haverley Universe). A regency-romance-mystery/intrigue series/spy/adventurous series.
