This was an engaging story.
This story picks up around the time of the first novel, The Lawyer and The Laundress, during the 1837 Upper Canada rebellion – a fascinating period of Canadian history.
Charlotte is determined to protect what’s left of her family inheritance by finding her missing brother to save them from ruin. Joshua is determined to free his brother from indentured service.
I enjoyed reading about the Upper Canada rebellion and familiar historical figures relegated to history textbooks. Familiar landmarks are mentioned in their crude beginnings – vivid descriptions providing ample information to picture what it would have looked like back then.
There are characters to love and characters to dislike, as well as friends from the previous novel who make reappearances. And the slow-burn romance between Charlotte and Joshua is quite sweet.
A fun, light historical read for those interested in Canadian history and sweet romances.
I received an ecopy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
